Group 7 Flashcards
State and colour of chlorine at room temperature
Green/yellow gas
How does chlorine react with damp litmus paper?
Chlorine bleaches damp litmus paper.
State and colour of bromine at room temperature
Bromine is a brown liquid at room temperature
Iodine state and colour at room temperature
Grey solid
What happens to iodine when it is heated?
It sublimes to give purple fumes?
As you go down group 7, the boiling point of the halogens …
Increases
As you go down group 7, the colour of the halogens becomes ….
Darker
What is the trend in reactivity for group 7?
The halogens become less reactive as you go down the group
Explain the trend in reactivity for group 7.
- as you go down the group, the number of outer shells that the halogens have increases.
- this makes it harder for the halogen to gain 1 electron because there is a weaker force of attraction between the electron and the nucleus.
- therefore halogens get less reactive down the group.
Colour of chlorine in aqueous solution.
Pale yellow
Colour of bromine in an aqueous solution
Orange
Colour of iodine in aqueous solution
Red brown
why does the boiling point of the halogens increase as you go down the group?
the molecules become larger so the intermolecular forces become stronger.
