What happened during early industrial growth
A
- During the industrial revolution Manchester was the centre of processing cotton imported from the USA
- Had a thriving engineering and manufacturing sectors
- specialised in producing machines for factories
- 1894 the opening of the Manchester ship canal
- 90 hectare inland site constructed to accommodate thriving trade.

what happened during the decline
A
- 1960s-1970s new large container ships couldn’t fit up the canal
- docks eventually closed in 1982
- 3,000 people lost their jobs
- derelict land left behind
- unemployment and crime rates rose.

what happened in the recent growth (5)
A
- in 1985 Salford Quays development plan was launched
- massive investments in healthcare, new homes, education, businesses and shops.
- Lowry building constructed (£64million)
- BBC moved 5 departments into Salford Quays. Generating 10,000 jobs and £1 billion to the regional economy by 2013
- Imperial war museum construction
- Cleansing water ways and constructing more green spaces + City parks
