Human Fieldwork Investigation Flashcards
What is the main question
An investigation into urban contrasts in the Portsmouth Harbour area
What’s sub q 1
How does land use vary between the three areas
What’s sub question 2
How does environmental quality vary between the three areas
What is sub q 3
Can these differences be explained by socio-economic factors
What were the different methods of data collection
- EQI
- Land Use
- Pedestrian count
What is being measured in each collection technique
- EQI - the EQI of each area out of 90
- Pedestrian count - amount of people walking by in 2 minutes. Measurement of 0 upwards
- Land use survey - RICEPOTS the av building type of each area.
What does RICEPOTS stand for
Residential
Industrial
Commercial
Entertainment
Public building
Open space
Transport
Services
Why was the EQI important, how does it relate to the Qs
Relates to Sub Q2, shows diversity in EQ in all areas
Why is the Pedestrian count important, how does it relate to the Qs
Relates to sub Q3, how busy each of the areas are
Why is the land use survey important, how does it relate to the Qs
Sub Q1
How was the data recorded
- EQI recorded in a table (added up scores at the bottom)
- Pedestrian count recorded in a table (included location, time of day, count and comment
- Land use survey recorders on a base map for the specific areas. The scale was 1:5000
What was some of the problems for each technique
- EQI: it was qualitative data, this means that it could vary between each person
- Pedestrian count: unclear how far away each pedestrian has to be, it is very dependent on time of day/day in week.
- Land use survey: taking an av for the area overlooks other data, so it could be more accurate
How was the data presented, how could it be improved
- EQI: Bar graphs, location of information. Could’ve used proportional symbols, but it could be argued that it would’ve made it harder to see the specific areas
- Pedestrian count: proportional symbols on a base map. It is hard to compare absolute values as they weren’t represented
- Land use survey: Colour coded base map (not very accurate as it is an av and time consuming to make), Pie chart ( need actual figures, colour code with the base map)
- Secondary data on socio-economic profiles: Pie charts
Answer Sub q1
- most common land use is residential nearly 50% for both Charles Dickens and St Thomas
- Commercial is the most common in Gunwharf (about 40% of land). Transport is second
- the key differences between these areas is that the wards are more residential than Gunwharf which is more commercial
Answer sub q2
- Gunwharf has a higher EQI: this is due to it being reurbanised and regenerated
- Charles dickens has a lower EQI: less street furniture, more dereliction and less greenery
