Climate Flashcards
Wet and warm
Tropical Maritime, comes from Atlantic ocean
Warm and dry
Tropical continental, from S Europe and N Africa
Cold and dry
Polar continental, europe
Cold and wet
Polar Maritime, Greenland
Very cold
Artic Maritine, arctic
What is the air do when there is a low pressure
- warm moist air rises
What does the air do when there is a high pressure
Cold air sinks
How does Lattitude affect climate
- Lattitude is angle from equator
- affects amount of sunlight recieved due to the:
. Angle of incidence
.Amount of atmospher sun passes through
How does the prevailing wind affect the climate
- most dominant wind in the UK
- comes from SW
- brings warm moist air which affects the climate
How does the NAD affect climate
Warm ocean current keeps the UK warmer, UK weather is warmer than otherwise would be, increased evaporation, increased rainfall
How does continentality affect UK climate
Continental areas are drier than maritine areas, this is because the prevailing wind brings moist air into maritine areas. Continental areas don’t have the prevailing wind. They are also further away from any large bodies of water meaning that the moist air dries before it reaches these areas.
Define climate
the long-term average of the temp and rainfall experienced at a location
What is the UK climate and why
- Maritime climate
–> influenced by sea surrounding it
–> onshore winds bring warm moist air
what is diurnal
something that happens on a daily basis, e.g. freeze-thaw cycle
what are the steps in the freeze-thaw cycle
- water seeps into cracks and fractures in he rock
- When water freezes, it expands about 9% in volume
- wedging apart the rock
- if process keeps repeating, the rock will eventually split/break into pieces
how has human activity influenced the landscape
- settlements
- farming
how might Traffic infrastructure be an indicator of human influence on the landscape
- Roads and motorways
–> create noise
–> barrier to the movement of wildlife
how might street lighting be an indicator of human influence on the landscape
- light pollution; hides night sky
how might construction activity be an indicator of human influence on the landscape
- a sign that an area will become even more impacted
- cranes and scaffolding ruining the views of skylines
how might high-rise development be an indicator of human influence on the landscape
indicates higher land value, which are a function of better accessibility
how might solar farms be an indicator of human influence on the landscape
- take up green spaces, resulting in loss of wildlife
how might golf courses be an indicator of human influence on the landscape
- chemicals used to keep the courses green and free of weeds
