- 6 distinct districts, each with it’s own characteristics

- to the West of the Paraná river
How did Rosario develop
- founded by Luis Romero in late 17th century
- Argentina’s first port to export goods (drawing in migrant workers)
- migrant workers brought gang activity and the Mafia from Italian workers
- French architecture and impressive stock exchange are evidence of the cities wealth and importance
- meat-packing centre for the region of corned beef for export
What are the Patterns of national and international migration
- attracted lots of migrant workers (Second to USA) which has enriched the culture of the city
- arrivals include Spanish (in 16th century) and others from Europe (19th Century).
- Italian immigration has been key; influencing the culture on food and architecture
Describe shopping in Rosario
- can go shopping in ‘El Centro’
—> undergone investment to attract families and visitors to shop there
Describe the importance of meat
- close cultural connections to meat
- The asado, or grill, is an important feature of many restaurants

- Unemployment
- Crime

Describe the unemployment problem in Rosario
- in 2001 there were riots in the city
- high unemployment and economic problems lead to lots of looting
- by improving employment, these riots will reduce
Describe the crime problem in Rosario
- villas miserias (or slums) are where there’s high crime and drug wars between Sicilian mobsters
- Therefore damaging the cities name in association with gangs like barras bravas
Describe the social inequality and divisions problem in Rosario
- Slums house over 10,000 people and cover around 10% of the city space
- these develop due to infrastructure and services not being able to support the rapid growth of Rosario
