Farming Flashcards
1
Q
What is the impact of mechanisation
A
- more efficient
- requires larger fields (cut back more wildlife)
- only requires minimal effort
2
Q
Impact of removal of hedgerows
A
- Loss of habitat
- over 450,000km of hedgerows have been removed
- we need to do it for development room
3
Q
Loss of habitat impact
A
We need wildlife corridors for the animals left with no habitats from our hedge row removal
4
Q
Explain what the fallow period is
A
- leave fields idele so the diseases that developped during crop season die
- Intesnse supply and demmand doesn’t allow for this
5
Q
What is the impact of fertilizers
A
- they provide plants with nitrogen, phosphorous and poatssium to help grow
- can cause eutrophication
6
Q
Describe eutrophocation
A
- Nutrient load up, fertilizer nutrients flushed from land into rivers/lakes by rain
- Plants underwater flourish
- algae booms, blocks sun, plants die, no photosynthesis, no oxygen
- bacteria use up remainding oxygen to decompose plants
- death to ecosystem due to no oxygen
7
Q
What is the pattern of UK landscape use
A
- dominantly grassland and arable land (making up 50%)
- other 50% is made up from
—> mountains, heaths and bogs
—> semi natural grassland
—> coniferous woodland
—> Broadleaf
—> urban areas
8
Q
Describe how modern farming has impacted natural ecosystems
A
- encourages clearing land for larger fields (for the big machines)
- Removal of hedgerows (450,000km)
- no fallow period due to intense supply + demand = disease spreads through crops
- uses of fertilisers has caused Eutrophication
9
Q
What is commercial fishing
A
- Has increased throughout 20th-21st Century
- led to development in fishing in the North Sea
- It uses large trawlers with thermal sensors and digital imagery
—> helps identify where fish stocks are located
10
Q
How has commercial fishing affected ecosystems + environment
A
- Over fishing. Most cod are being killed before breeding age, so now sizes of fish caught are regulated
- large nets for tuna will snag on coral or capture dolphins/rare species = killing them
- fish live far away from where we have normally fished = fishing boats need to travel further away = more diesel is used = water pollution and increased use of fossil fuels
11
Q
When does water stress occur
A
When availability of water doesn’t meet demand
12
Q
What are areas of deficit
A
- locations where insufficient rainfall occurs to meet demands permanently
13
Q
What are areas of surplus
A
Locations where more rainfall occurs than is needed to meet demands permanently
