Safety Precautions with Radiation Tx Flashcards
Which type of radiation treatment will have radioactive waste eliminated from body?
unsealed isotopes–then enter the body fluids so are then eliminated into waste products
How do sealed isotopes work?
Inserted directly into the tumor
**pt emits radiation, but none in waste products
Which type of radiation will the pt emit radiation from body?
Sealed
**this is where the safety teaching is important
Precautions for pts with sealed implants:
room type
private room with private bath
Precautions for pts with sealed implants:
portable lead shield?
if used, place b/t pt and door
Precautions for pts with sealed implants:
pts door
keep closed
Precautions for pts with sealed implants:
Dosimeter
this is a badge that detects amount of radiation, DOES NOT protect
**NURSE wears this
Precautions for pts with sealed implants:
lead apron
nurse wears while providing care
**always keep front of apron facing the source of pt
T or F: it is okay to turn back to pt while wearing lead apron?
No–it only protects front!!
Precautions for pts with sealed implants:
pregnant nurse?
Do not work with this pt
*also if there is a chance you could be pregnant
Precautions for pts with sealed implants:
Visitors?
- no preg women or children younger than 16
- 1/2 hour limit visit
- 6 feet from source
Precautions for pts with sealed implants:
Touching radioactive substance
NEVER with bare hands
- use long handled forceps if needed
- put in lead container if comes out
Precautions for pts with sealed implants:
dressings/bed linens
save in pt’s room until after radioactive source removed
Precautions for pts with sealed implants:
Equipment
no special precautions
**basic cleaning
Education for skin protection:
washing skin?
- mild soap and water
- hand instead of washcloth
- rinse throughly
- DO NOT remove dye markings
