Hip precautions after surgery:
sitting/standing
- do not sit or stand for long periods of time
- do not twist body while standing

- straight leg raises
- gluteal sets
- ankle pumps
- “ham” sets
What if a pt has acute chest pain/SOB after surgery?
call 911!!!
Bleeding precautions if on anticoagulant?
- avoid using straight razor
- avoid injury
- report bleeding/excessive bruising
T or F: low chairs are best after hip surgery?
F–avoid low chairs!!
Which should NOT be done:
ADDuction or ABduction?
Adduction should be avoided
What should be done with the toes?
DO NOT internally rotate
Should the pt turn on the operative side after hip replacement?
no!!!
What type of pillow can be used?
ABduction
What is the classic sign of a dislocation?
shortening of the affected leg
**along with inability to move, abnormal rotating, increased discomfort
What type of activities should be done after joint replacement?
low impact, low stress on joint (swimming/cycling)
What are the complications of joint replacement?
- infection!!!!
- peripheral neurovascular dysfunction
- pain
- blood clots/lack of activity
- inadequate nutrition
