Criteria for SIRS and Sepsis Flashcards
What is SIRS?
Systemic inflammatory response syndrome
T/F: Inflammatory response can occur without infection
True
*but once localized infection becomes systemic then it is considered sepsis bc whole body is involved (virus, bacteria, fungus can cause)
Generalized systemic inflammation in organs remote from initial injury
SIRS
Etiology of SIRS
Infection
Noninfectious source (Thromboembolism, autoimmune disorders, pancreatitis)
How many symptoms must be present to dx SIRS?
2 or more
SIRS symptoms
What is temp?
More than 38 or less than 36
SIRS symptoms
What is HR?
Over 90 bpm
SIRS symptoms
What is RR?
Over 20 OR PaCO2 less than 32
SIRS symptoms
What is WBC?
More than 12000 or less than 4000 or more than 10% immature bands
When SIRS is a result of infection
Sepsis
What is sepsis due to?
Gram neg bacteria, gram + bacteria, fungus, viruses
How to evaluate for severe sepsis?
First ask: is there infection?
Second ask: Is there systemic reaction to infection?
Third ask: Is organ dysfunction present
What if there is a “yes” answer to all 3 questions asked when you are evaluating the pt. for severe sepsis?
Then initiate sepsis criteria
What is sepsis caused by?
Distributive shock
What are symptoms of sepsis?
The systemic response to infection symptoms
