EMG, Paget's and Ewing's Sarcoma Flashcards
What occurs with EMG
Low electrical currents pass through flat electrodes placed along nerve
When is EMG used? (3)
- Neuromuscular disorders (weakness–ALS)
- lower motor neuron
- peripheral nerve disorders
What do we need to assess if a needle was used in EMG?
for hematoma formation
Does an EMG hurt?q
may cause temporary discomfort
Is sedation needed for EMG?
Mild sedation may be ordered
What about meds before EMG?
MD may want the pt to discontinue skeletal muscle relaxants a few days before the test so results are not affected.
What occurs with Paget’s Disease?
New deformed bone replaces old bone
What do we need to assess in a pt with Paget’s Disease?
- ask about hx of fracture/bone pain
- observe posture, stance, gait to identify deformities
What musculoskeletal symptoms accompany Paget’s Disease?
Pain:
- bone and joint pain
- low back/sciatic nerve pain
What musculoskeletal symptoms accompany Paget’s Disease?
Bone appearance
- Bowing of long bones
- Loss of normal spinal curvature
- Enlarged, thick skull
Symptoms of Paget’s:
Skin
flushed, warm skin
Symptoms of Paget’s:
Behavior
apathy, lethargy, fatigue
Symptoms of Paget’s:
Other
- hyperparathryoidism
- gout
- urinary/renal stones
- heart failure
Why are xrays, CT, MRI needed?
To show structural changes
What is the biggest complication of having Paget’s?
Pathological bone fractures often occur
