What does a Vitamin D deficiency cause?
A
softening of bone and bone loss

A
- vitamin D disturbances
- kidney disease
- familiar metabolic error

Why do vitamin D deficiencies occur?
A
- Lack of sunlight (homebound)
- dietary deficiency
- gastrectomy
- Crohn’s disease
- druh therapy

How can osteoporosis be prevented?
A
When T-score is showing osteopenia, then CHANGE diet and exercise
**ADD CALCIUM!!!!

What is the first choice drug for Osteoporosis?
A
Biphosphonates
-dronate

Teaching for Biphosphonates?
A
- remain upright for 30 min after taking
- Take with 8oz of water
- take in MORNING
- if GERD/renal dysfunction–do not take

special instructions for Pamidronate and Zoledronic acid (IV)
A
report kaw pain and go to dentist for regular checkups

What other meds for osteoporosis?

- Raloxifene (DVT risk–don’t use in smokers)
- Denosumab
