Sacrum Flashcards
What is the Alae?
WInged shaped portions that sweep laterally from the 1st sacral segment
What is the insertion site for the iliacus muscle?
Lesser trochanter of the femur
What is the origin of the iliacus muscle?
Iiac fossa and alae of the sacrum
What is the action done by the iliacus muscle?
Flexes and laterally rotates the thigh at the hip joint
What is the Anterior sacral foramina?
Holes found in the concave anterior facing surface of the sacrum
What are the transverse lines?
Horizontal ridges found on the concave anterior facing surface of the sacrum, between the anterior sacral foramina
What is the Promontory?
Most prominent anterior projection of the first sacral vertebra
What is the Auricular surface?
Forms part of the sacroiliac joint
Articular surface found on both sides of the sacrum.
Has appearance of a ‘roughened ear-shape’ surface
What are the superior articular facets?
Found at the top of the sacrum, either side of the sacral canal
What are the Posterior wall?
Posterior (back) of the sacrum, between the median sacral crest and lateral sacral crests
Attachment site for: Multifidus msucel (superiorly) and Gluteus maximus muscle (inferior to multifidus) [2 muscles]
What is the the insertion site of the Multfidus muscle?
Spinous processes of vertebrae, 2-4 bones superior to its origin
What is the insertion site of the Gluetus maximus?
Iliotibial tract of fascia lata, and gluteal tuberosity of the femur.
What is the action done by the Gluetus maximus?
Extends the thigh, laterally rotates the thigh, and stabilises the thigh.
What is the Median sacral crest?
Midline projection of bone found on the dorsal/posterior wall.
Formed from the fused spinous processes of the sacral vertebrae
What is the Posterior sacral foramina?
Holes found in the convex posterior facing surface of the sacrum
What is the Lateral sacral crests?
Lateral projections of bone found on the dorsal/posterior wall, lateral to the posterior sacral foramina
Formed by the fusion of transverse processes of the sacral vertebrae
What is the Sacral Canall?
Large opening running through the centre of the sacrum
What is the origin site of the Piriformis muscle?
Anterior surface of the sacrum - posterior inferior ilac spine of the inominate
What is the insertion site for the piriformis muscle?
Greater trochanter of the femur
What action is done by the piriformis muscle?
Laterally rotates the femur
