Humerus Flashcards
What is the head in the Humerus?
The hemisphere found on the proximal end of the humerus - facing in a medial direction
- Articulates with the glenoid cavity of the scapula
What is the anatomical neck in the Humerus?
The groove that encircles the articular surface of the head of the humerus
What is the surgical neck in the Humerus?
The the noticable constriction of bone found inferior to the head of the humerus and greater and less tubercles
- Connects the head of the humerus to the shaft of the humerus
What si the Greater tubercle in the Humerus?
Large projection of bone found on the anterior surface on the proximal humerus
- projects more laterally than the lesser tubercle
What is the crest of the greater tubercle in the Humerus?
The medial lip of the greater tubercle
What is the Bicipital groove?
The groove that extends longitudinaly down the proximal shaft of the humerus
- Between the greater and lesser tubercles
- Attachment site for the Latissimus dorsi muscle
What is the origin of the Latissimus dorsi?
Spinous process of lower siz throacic vertebrae and thoraco-lumbar fascia
What is the action done by the Latissimus Dorsi muscle?
Extends, adducts and medially rotates humerus
What is the Lesser tubercle in the Humerus?
Small projection of bone on the anterior surface
- Medial to the greater tubercle and lateral to the head of the humerus
Attachment site for Subscapularis muscle
What is the crest of the lesser tubercle in the Humerus?
Lateral lip of the lesser tubercle
Attachment site for the Teres major muscle
What is the Deltoid tuberosity in the Humerus?
Raised area of bone found on the lateral surface of the shaft of the humerus
What is the nutrient foramen in the Humerus?
Foramen found on the anteromedial surface of the shaft
- Opening of the nutrient foramen is proximally oriented
What si the Medial epicondyle?
Non-articular medial projection of bone found on the distal humerus
- Projects more prominently than the lateral epicondyle
What is the Medial epicondyle the attachment site to?
4 muscles
What is the purpose of the 4 muscles attached to the Humerus?
Flexes the hand at the wrist
What is the Medial supracondylar crest in the Humerus
Found superior to the medial epicondle - forms the shape medial border of the distal humerus
Attachment site for the Pronator teres muscle
What is the insertion site of the pronator teres muscle
Middle of lateral surface of radius
What is the action done by the pronator teres muscle?
Pronates forearm and flexes elbow
What is the Laterl epidicondyle on the Humerus?
Non-articular lateral projection of boen found on the distal humerus
How many muscles are attached to the Laterl epdicondyle on the Humerus?
7
What is the Lateral supracondylar crest?
Superior to the lateral epicondyle and forms the sharp lateral border of the distal humerus
- Attachment site for the Brachiordialis muscle
What is the insertion site of the Brachioradialis muscle?
Laterl distal radisu
What is the action done by the Brachioradialis muscle?
Flexes the forearm
What is the Trochlea in the Humerus?
Spool shaped projection of boen on the anterior surfac eof the distal humerus
- Found miedally and articulates with the ulna
What is the Capitulum in the Humerus?
Rounded projection of bone on the anterior surface of the distal humerus. It is positioned laterally and articulates with the head of the radius
What is the Coronoid fossa in the Humerus?
Larger, more medially positioned hollow, of the two hollows found on the anterior surface of the distal humerus.
Superior to the trochlea.
What is the Radial fossa in the Humerus?
Smaller, more laterally positioned hollow, of the two hollows found on the anterior surface of the distal humerus.
Superior to the capitulum and trochlea.
What is the Olecranon fossa in the Humerus?
The large hollow found on the posterior surface of the distal humerus.
It accommodates the olecranon process of the ulna.
What is the insertion site for the Brachalis muscle?
Coronoid process and ulnar (brachial) tuberosity of the ulna
What is the action done by the Brachialis muscle?
Flexes the elbow joint
