RIbs and Sternum Flashcards
What are the ribs categorised into?
True ribs
False ribs
Floating ribs
What ribs are true ribs?
Ribs 1-7, articulate with the sternum directly via cartilage
What ribs are the false ribs?
8-10, articulate with the sternum indirectly and are connected to the 7th rib via cartilage
What ribs are the floating ribs?
11-12, only attached to the vertebrae and are not attached to the sternum or cartilag
What is the head?
The swollen end of a rib. It has two articular surfaces (demifacets) for contact with the bodies of successive thoracic vertebra.
What is the neck?
The short segment of bone in-between the head of the rib and the tubercle of the rib.
What is the Tubercle?
The projection of bone found in the posteroinferior (back/bottom) corner of each rib
What is the angle?
Refer to the sharp curve of the rib just after (lateral to) the tubercle
What is the shaft?
Curved, tapering section of the rib between the tubercle and the tip of the rib.
What is the Costal groove?
The groove that can be felt along the inferior, inside edge of the rib shaft.
What is the sternal end?
The end of the rib shaft and tends to be cup shaped
What is the cranial edge?
The upper border of the bone, it is blunt, smooth and convex.
What is the Caudal edge?
The lower border of the bone. In most ribs it is sharp, with a costal groove on the medial (inside) surface.
What is the anterior groove of the first rib?
Is the anteriorly placed groove on the superior surface of the first rib
What is the Posterior groove of the first rib?
Posteriorly placed groove on the superior surface of the first rib
What is the Scalene tubercle?
Small projection of bone located in between the anterior and posterior groove of the first rib, near the internal mid shaft position
What is the insertion site of the anterior scalene muscle?
Scalene tubercle fo the first rib
What is the origin site of the subclavius muscle?
Junction of the first rib with costal cartilage
What is the insertion site of the subclavius muscle?
Subclavian sulcus on the inferior surface of the clavicle
What is the costoclavicular ligament connected from and to?
From the first rib and to the clavicle
What is the Serratus anterior tuberosity?
Large projection of bone found near the external mid shaft position
What is the Manubrium in the Sternum?
Triangular shaped portion of the three main sternal elements
What is the body of the sternum in the Sternum?
Central part of the sternum. Has notches along its sides
What is the Xiphoid process in the Sternum?
Inferior tip of the sternum
What is the Suprasternal notch?
Notch found at the top of the manubrium
What is the Clavicular notch?
Notches found at the superior/ateral corners of the manubrium
- Articulates witht he left and right clavicles
What are the Costal notches?
Notches found on both sides of the manubrium and articulates with the ribs from 1 to 7
What is the origin site of the Sternocleidomastoid muscle?
Superior part of the Manubrium and medial part of the Clavicle
What is the insertion site of the Sternocleidomastoid muscle?
Mastoid process of the temporal and superior nuchal of the occipital
What is the origin site of the Pectoralis major muscle?
Clavicular part - anteromedial border of the superior surface of the clavicle.
Sternocostal part - Sternum and costal cartilages 1-6.
What is the insertion site of the pectoralis major muscle?
Inferior portion of the crest of the greater tubercle
