S1 - Cells and Body Systems (complete) Flashcards
This deck covers the Cells and Body Systems topic covered in S1 Science. Cells and Body Systems is a Biology topic.
Microscope
Instrument used to see objects which are too small to be seen with the eye.

One of 3 lenses that magnify by 4, 10 or 20X.
Objective lens

Stain
A coloured solution used so that a specimen can be seen more clearly.
What stain would you use for an onion cell?
Iodine

What stain would you use for a cheek cell?
Methylene blue

Cover slip
Small glass square that covers the specimen.

Slide
Glass rectangle to hold the specimen.

Lens at the top of the microscope which magnifies by 10X.
Eyepiece
Used to sharpen the image seen in a microscope.
Focus
Label the three main parts of an animal cell

Cell wall
Supports the plant cell and helps it keep its shape.
Vacuole
Stores dissolved salts and sugars.
Cell membrane
Controls what substances go in and out of a cell.
Cytoplasm
The site of chemical reactions.
Nucleus
Contains DNA which controls the cell’s activities.
Chloroplast
Where sugars are made in plant cells by photosynthesis. Only green parts of a plant have them (e.g. leaves).
Micrometre
1000th of a millimetre.
(1000 micrometers = 1 mm)
Multicellular
Made of many cells.
Specialised cell
A cell adapted for a particular function.
(e.g. egg cell, muscle cell)
Tissue
A group of specialised cells.
(e.g. muscle tissue = group of muscle cells)
Organ
A structure containing different types of tissue.
(e.g. heart, lungs, etc.)
Organ system
A group of organs working together.
(e.g. digestive system)
Digestive system

Breaks down food and absorbs nutrients.
Name three organs which are part of the digestive system.
Any three of:
Tongue
Salivary glands
Oesophagus/gullet
Stomach
Liver
Gall bladder
Pancreas
Small intestine
Large intestine
Rectum
Anus
Tube that squeezes the food down to the stomach.
Oesophagus/gullet
A bag that churns up food. It contains acid and gastric juice.
Stomach

Wide tube that undigested food passes through. Water is absorbed from it back into the body.
Large intestine

Very long tube food passes through after leaving the stomach. Food is completely digested and absorbed into the blood stream.
Small intestine

Oesophagus/gullet
Tube that squeezes the food down to the stomach.
Stomach

A bag that churns up food. It contains acid and gastric juice.
Large intestine

Wide tube that undigested food passes through. Water is absorbed from it back into the body.
Small intestine

Very long tube food passes through after leaving the stomach. Food is completely digested and absorbed into the blood stream.
Circulatory system

Circulates blood which carries materials around the body.
Name three organs which are part of the circulatory system.
Any three of:
heart
arteries
veins
capillaries
blood
Heart

Pushes blood through the blood vessels.
Arteries
Large blood vessels. Blood travels through them away from the heart.
(Arteries = Away)
Veins
Large blood vessels. Blood travels through them towards the heart.
Capillaries
Very small blood vessels.
Pushes blood through the blood vessels.
Heart

Large blood vessels. Blood travels through them away from the heart.
(Arteries = Away)
Arteries
Large blood vessels. Blood travels through them towards the heart.
Veins
Very small blood vessels.
Capillaries
Respiratory system

Used for exchange of gases with the environment.
(exhale carbon dioxide, inhale oxygen)
