Describe process
A
- use cork bored to produce 3 cylinders of potato
- measure length of each cylinder with ruler and mass of cylinder with a balance
- place each cylinder into test tube
- add 10cm of 0.5molar sugar, 0.25molar sugar and distilled water to each test tube
- leave overnight
- remove potato and roll onto paper towel to remove surface any moisture
- measure length and mass of cylinders again

A
Contains no dissolved substance to effect rate of osmosis

Change in value/ original value X100

A
Distilled water
= potato gains mass as more osmosis
Concentrate sugar solution
= cylinder loses mass as water moved out by osmosis

Why is there no change in pass once passed x axis
A
Concentration outside of cell is same as concentration inside of cell
= no overall osmosis takes place
