Blood Flashcards
1
Q
Plasma function
A
Transport dissolved substances around body
- transports co2 from organs to lungs
- transports urea from liver to kidney
- transports soluble digestion products from small intestine to other organs
2
Q
Red blood cell function
A
Transport oxygen from lungs to body cells
3
Q
Adaptations of red blood cells
A
- contain haemoglobin
- no nucleus
= more room for haemoglobin - biconcave disc
= greater surface area so that oxygen diffuses in and out rapidly
4
Q
White blood cell function
A
Form part of the immune system
Eg make antibodies
5
Q
Adaptations of white blood cells
A
- contain a nucleus
= contains DNA which encode jobs of white blood cells
6
Q
Platelets function
A
Cause blood clot
7
Q
Uses of donated blood in medicine
A
- replace blood lost during an injury
- some people given platelets from blood to help in clotting
- proteins extracted from blood can be useful eg make antibodies
8
Q
Problems of donated blood
A
- must make sure blood type is the same or immune system will reject blood and patient could die
- risk of infection
9
Q
Chemicals transported by plasma
A
• carbon dioxide
• cholesterol
• enzymes
• fatty acid
10
Q
Factors that affect cholesterol
A
Diet
Genetic makeup
