roy adaptation model Flashcards
why follow a nursing model
- helps make sense of the data nurses collect & helps nurse to organize
- provides structure on how the nurse will care for the patient
- guides the decision-making process
- helps nurse apply their knowledge to unique clinical situations
what is adaptation
the act or process of changing to better suit a situation: internal & external
name the four basic concepts of a nursing model
1) person
2) environment
3) health
4) nursing
describe person
a) stimuli = cause
b) behavior (output)= sign & symptom
c) interdependence= significant other & support system
d) control= coping mechanism
describe health
state of being
a) health is the ability to cope with a disease
describe nursing
nurse should support this patient and enhance interaction with person’s environment
describe environment
world within & around humans
name all 4 adaptation modes Roy
1) physiologic mode : skin/activity/ rest
2) roles
3) support system
4) self-concept
Describe signs & symptoms
internal & external reaction/actions = something is causing the actions
how to classify sign and symptoms
sign= observed, measured, subjectively reported= can be classified as ineffective, adaptive
How to classify ineffective and adaptive
do they meet the goals of adaptation, compare with young healthy adult
describe second level (causes)
known as stimuli, provokes a response
what are the 3 type of cause
primary, secondary, possible.
- nurse will support cause (A) of S&S and alter causes (I) of S&S
describe primary, secondary, possible
primary= external/internal cause most confronting the human system ( CAN ONLY BE ONE)
secondary= contribute to primary. not the main reason contributing to the effect of the primary cause ( CAN BE NUMEROUS)
possible= must be validated by client. past experiences affect present behavior.
common causes affecting adaptation
culture, environment, age, family, adaptation levels
