tips for overcoming language barriers

A

be polite and formal (Mr, Mrs)
look positive and friendly
try to use even just a few words of the client’s language - make an effort
never use medical terminology
keep it simple
speak to the client not the interpreter
maintain eye contact as appropriate - looking at them reinforces that the comm. between them is important
