Rotifera Flashcards
How big are Rotifera?
Small = 100-500 micrometers
What is special about the pharynx of Rotifera?
Highly muscular with jaws for grasping/crushing/grinding prey
What does the toes of Rotifera have?
Adhesive claws
What are the 3 classes of Rotifera?
1- Monogononta
2- Bdelloidea
3- Seisonidea
How does the class Monogononta reproduce?
Both sexually and asexually
Explain asexual reproduction in the class Monogononta
Amictic females = parthenogenesis (diploid eggs are produced by mitosis) grow into females
Explain sexual reproduction in the class Monogononta
Conditions must be met
Both mictic and amictic females
Mictic females produce mictic eggs = unfertilized will turn into males and produce sperm
Fertilized will turn into resting egg until right conditions will turn into amictic females
Where are the class Bdelloidea found?
Anywhere from Antarctic lakes to hot springs
How does the class Bdelloidea reproduce?
Entirely asexual = amictic females
Where are the class Seisonidea found?
All marine and live in symbiosis with other organisms
What does the class Seisonidea have instead of toes?
Adhesives disc
