Nematoda Flashcards
What are Nematoda?
Roundworms
What coelom formation does Nematoda have?
Pseudocoelomate or in some case acoelomate
Nematoda have amphids. What are these?
Unique cephalic sense organs
What is the outside layer of a Nematoda called? What has to happen to it when they are young?
Cuticle - juveniles molt = ecdysis
What is the body wall of Nematoda have? (Hint. helps them move)
Longitudinal muscles
Explain the excretory system of a Nematoda
Unique - 1 or 2 renette cells
How do Nematoda reproduce?
Gonochoristic (separation of sexes)
Explain the 3 different living styles of Nematoda
1- small and free-living (90,000 in rotten apple)
2- as parasites in most animals and plant groups
3- general and specific habitats (e.g Europe bear coaster only)
Where is the brain found in Nematoda?
Wrapped around gut
Nematoda is said to be Eutely. What does this mean?
Constancy of cell numbers = mitosis stops in all somatic cell once organogenesis is complete
How many ecdysis (molts) do Nematoda go through?
4 during growth and maturation
Explain the 1st molt stage of Nematoda (loses 5)
Entire cuticle is shed = larva loses lining of:
bucal capsule/pharynx/vagina/rectum/cloaca (a cavity)
Explain the 2nd molt of Nematoda
Cuticle not discarded but forms protective sheath around 3rd stage larva
What is the class of Nematoda?
Secernentea
What do all species of the class Secernentea have?
Phasmids (stick like)
