Rotenone Flashcards
T/F: rotenone is a synthetic compound
false, it occurs naturally in seeds and stems of several plants
Rotenone is approved by EPA to remove: A) fungus B) pests C) fish D) weeds
C - it is a peiscicide
Most toxic route of absorption of rotenone?
inhalation - direct pathway to circulatory system
Toxicity of rotenone?
neurotoxic
How are fish exposed to rotenone?
passes directly into bloodstream through gills or trachea
MoA of rotenone
blocks oxidative phosphorylation in TCA cycle
interferes with electron transport chain and NADH during ATP production
cellular oxygen reduced resulting in ROS
causes oxidative stress damaging DNA and organelle resulting in neuronal cell death
General clinical Signs of rotenone toxicity
dermal exposure - local irritation (conjunctivitis, congestion, dermatitis
Oral exposure - GI irritant, convulsions, muscle tremors, lethargy, incontinence and resp stimulation followed by depression
resp exposure - severe pulmonary irritation and asphyxia
Predominante clinical signs of rotenone toxicity
is a neurotoxin so depression and convulsions
Diagnosis of rotenone
Lab
- antemortem see hypoglycaemia, liver enzyme changes, hypoxemia/hypercapnea
Dx - Hx, check with fish authorities
Treatment of rotenone toxicity
no specific Tx, rapidly metabolized supportive treatment (tx seizures and hypoglycaemia)
