- Make the road transport system more accommodation to human error.
- Manage the forces that injure people in a crash to a level the human body can tolerate without serious injury.

What are the Safe System’s focus? (4)
- Safe Roads - predictable and forgiving of mistakes.
- Safe Speeds - speeds suit the function and level of safety of the road.
- Safe Vehicles - prevent crashes and protect road users, pedestrians, cyclists in the event of a crash.
- Use - skilled, competent, alert road users, that comply with road rules, take steps to improve safety, demand and expect safety improvements.

Road safety is everyones responsibility.
Requires a shared responsibilty between road users & designers.

A Safe System approach requires shared responsibility between road users and system designers. For this to occur who and what is required? (5)
- Road Controlling Authorities have to design, build, maintain raods, manage speeds to protect responsible road users.
- The Vehicle Industry has to provide safe vehicles and be socially responsible when marketing vehicles to consumers.
- Central and Local Governments have to inform and educate NZ’s about road safety, provide effective safety regulation and adequately fund road safety.
- Road Users take steps to increase their road safety, complying with road rules, being unimpaired by alcohol/drugs/fatigue or distraction.
- Employers ensure corporate policy & pratice supports a positive road safety culture based on a Safe System approach
