Rhabdomyolysis Flashcards
1
Q
What is rhabdomyolysis?
A
- Breakdown of skeletal muscle
- Myocyte apoptosis which releases myoglobin, potassium, phosphate and CK
2
Q
Why does rhabdo affect the kidneys?
A
- Myoglobin is toxic in high concentrations to the kidneys so can cause AKI
3
Q
What are causes of rhabdomyolysis?
A
- Prolonged immobility e.g falls patients
- Extremely rigorous excercises
- Crash injuries
- Seizures
- Statins
4
Q
How does rhabdomyolysis present?
A
- Muscle pain and weakness
- Muscle swelling
- Red-brown urine/reduced urine output
- Fatigue
- N+V
5
Q
How is rhabdomyolysis investigated?
A
- Raised CK
- Red-brown urine due to myoglobin
- U+E to check for AKI and hyperkalaemia
6
Q
How is rhabdomyolysis managed?
A
- IV fluids
- Treat complications, mainly hyperkalaemia
