What is haemolytic uraemic syndrome?

A

Thrombosis in the small vessels throughout the body usually triggered by Shiga toxins from E coli 0157 or Shigella

What is the classic triad of HUS?

A
  • AKI
  • Thrombocytopenia
  • Normocytic Microangiopathic haemolytic anaemia

What is Microangiopathic haemolytic anaemia?

A
  • Small thrombi partially obstruct the small blood vessels and cause RBC to rupture

How does HUS present?

A
  • E coli and Shigella cause gastroenteritis
  • First symptom is bloody diarrhoea
  • Fever
  • Abdo pain
  • Reduced urine output
  • Bruising
  • Pallor
  • HTN

A

Stool culture to find organism

How is HUS managed?

A
  • Hospital admission
  • Supportive management with fluids, manage HTN, anaemia and renal failure
  • Usually self-limiting
