What is haemolytic uraemic syndrome?
A
Thrombosis in the small vessels throughout the body usually triggered by Shiga toxins from E coli 0157 or Shigella

What is the classic triad of HUS?
A
- AKI
- Thrombocytopenia
- Normocytic Microangiopathic haemolytic anaemia

What is Microangiopathic haemolytic anaemia?
A
- Small thrombi partially obstruct the small blood vessels and cause RBC to rupture

How does HUS present?
A
- E coli and Shigella cause gastroenteritis
- First symptom is bloody diarrhoea
- Fever
- Abdo pain
- Reduced urine output
- Bruising
- Pallor
- HTN

How is HUS investigated?
A
Stool culture to find organism

How is HUS managed?
A
- Hospital admission
- Supportive management with fluids, manage HTN, anaemia and renal failure
- Usually self-limiting
