What is renal artery stenosis?
A
Narrowing of the renal arteries resulting in reduced renal perfusion

What causes renal artery stenosis?
A
Elderly - Atherosclerosis
Young - Fibromuscular dysplasia

How does RAS present?
A
- Worsening renal function usually after starting an ACE inhibitor
- Refractory HTN
- Pulmonary oedema with no cardiac dysfunction

A
- U+Es
- Renal US
- Renal angio - gold standard

How is RAS managed?
A
- Control risk factors e.g. diabetes, HTN, cholesterol
- Transluminal angioplasty is definitive
