Retinopathy - DM, HTN Flashcards
What is diabetic retinopathy from?
prolonged and chronic hyperglycemia
What are two types of DR?
nonproliferative and proliferative
What DR occurs early in disease and often at end of 1st decade?
noproliferative
How does nonproliferative present?
microaneuysms, hemorrhage, cotton wool, hard exudates
What causes growth of new retinal vessels?
retinal hypoxia
How do you prevent DR?
tight glucose control
What are risk factors for viitreous hemorrhage?
Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy
Vitreoretinal traction and retinal tears
Trauma, accidents, shaken baby syndrome
What % of HTN pt have retinopathy?
15%
What are findings for HR?
Arteriovenous (AV) nicking Narrowing of retinal arteries Flame hemorrhages Microaneurysms Cotton wool spots Hard exudates
What is hallmark of HR?
AV nicking
What is malignant HTN?
> 200/130
What do you see on eye exam in malignant HTN?
optic disk swelling
What is CM of malignant HTN?
