Macular Degeneration & Retinal Detachment Flashcards
What is the separation of neurosensory retina from underlying retinal pigment epithelium?
retinal detachment
What cause cause retinal detachment?
break in retina, increase fluid behind it, vitreous traction
What are causes and risks of retinal detachment?
Increased risk with myopic patients Ocular trauma Cataract surgery CMV retinitis Association with use of fluoroquinolones as well
What is the CM of retinal detachment?
photopsia, floaters, cobwebs, fly in the eye, peripheral visual field loss
What are the risk factors for AMD?
Age: generally begins starting at age 50 and increases over age 65
Tobacco use: cessation can decrease rate of progression
Genetics: especially when early onset of AMD
History of cardiovascular disease
History of cataract surgery
What are the two types of AMD?
wet and dry
What is 90% of AMD?
dry
What does dry cause?
deposits of proteins and lipids under retina photoreceptors
What is wet?
neovascularization of choroid
Which AMD is slow and gradual?
dry
What is dry AMD visual field?
scotomas
What is the CM of dry AMD?
difficulty reading
What is vision loss in wet?
central, starts in one eye and then goes to the other, metamorphosia
What are the spots in AMD dry?
drusen spots
