What causes hyperacute bacterial conjunctivitis?
neisseria gonorrhoeae
What will pts with hyperacute bacterial conjunctivitis present with?
lid swelling, chemosis, preauricular adenopathy
How do you treat a pt with hyperacute bacterial conjunctivitis?
hospitalization with ABX topically and orally
What are the polymyxin B combos?
bacitracin
Neomycin/bacitracin
Trimethoprim
What is macrolide eye drops?
azithromycin
What causes viral conjunctivitis?
adenoviruses
What is the drainage like in viral conjunctivitis?
crusting in am and then clearer as the day progresses
What do pt have with viral infections, feeling wise?
scratchy or gritty
How long can viral conjunctivitis last?
2 wks
How do you treat viral conjunctivitis?
self limiting
How does allergic conjunctivitis present?
gradual and less severe than b/v
Is allergic conj uni or bilateral?
bilateral
What causes allergic conj?
IgE mediated mast cell degranulation and release of histamine
What is the main complaint with allergic conj?
itching
What is the treatment of allergic conj?
olopatadine hydrochloride 0.1%
olopatadine hydrochloride 0.2%
Azelastine hydrochloride 0.05%
Patanol, Pataday, Optivar
What causes nonallergic conj?
chemical, FB, chemicals, makeup, lotions
When is the only time you get cultures?
gonorrhea suspected
What requires further investigation?
ocular pain, HA, FB, fixed pupils, vision changes
