reticular formation Flashcards
efferent long distance reticular fibers arise from
medial 2/3 of the reticular formation (RF). this is the paramedial reticular formation
RF fibers that travel a short distance are mostly in
the lateral 1/3 of the RF. this is more related to circuits, interneurons
how are the main dendritic branches of the RF oriented?
in a plane perpenduciular to the long axis of the brainstem
what are some of the functions of the RFC
patterns (chewing, coughing), respiratory control, cardio control, sleep and levels of consiousness, pain modulation at the spinal cord, adjusting the motor system for posture and balance, ANS regulation, emotional regulation
parts of the reticular formation
raphe nuclei, paramedian reticular formation, periaquaductal gray, ventral tegmental area, locus coeruleus
what type of chemical is recognized by raphe nuclei
serotonergic (5H)
what nuclei in the thalamus does the RF project to
intralaminar nucleus
