Rest of Chapter 1 Flashcards
Osmosis
Went water moves from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a partially permeable membrane.
Isotonic solution
The concentration of sole use in the solution outside of the cell is the same as the concentration inside the cell.
Hypertonic solution
The concentration of sole use in the solution outside of the cells is higher than the concentration inside the cell - everyone is high so hyper.
Hypotonic solution
The concentration of sole use in the solution outside of the cell is lower than the concentration inside the cell - Low rhymes with hypotonic.
Plasmolysis
One more water is lost by osmosis so the vacuole and cytoplasm shrink and eventually the cell membrane is pulled away from the cell wall.
Active transport
When substances needed by cell must be moved against the concentration gradient or across a partially permeable membrane.
Diffusion
The net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration down a concentration gradient.
