Chapter 6 - Nervous Coordination Flashcards
Receptors
Part of the nervous system, detect stimuli. Found in the sense organs, eyes ears etc.
Motor neurone
Carry impulses from the CNS to effector organs, which contract (muscles) or secret if they are glands.
Relay neurone
Passes the impulse on after impulse is transmitted to CNS
Synapse
Junction between relay and motor neurone, chemicals transmit the impulse across the gap.
Reflex arc
The sequence from the receptor to the effector.
Order of reflex actions
Stimulus ➡️ receptor➡️ sensory neurone ➡️ motor neurone ➡️ effector ➡️ response
The brain
Made of billions of interconnected neurones and receive impulses from sensory neurones all over the body and coordinate the responses.
Cerebral cortex
Concerned with consciousness, intelligence, memory and language.
Cerebellum
Concerned with coordination of muscular activity.
Medulla
Concerned with unconscious activities such as breathing and heartbeat.
Pituitary gland
Produces hormones such as adh.
CNS
The central nervous system made up of the brain and spinal cord.
