Chapter 3 - Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins And Enzymes Flashcards
Lipids
Are fats and oils and the most efficient energy stored in the body which are in soluble in water. Made up of three molecules of fatty acid joined to one of glycerol
Proteins
Are made up of long chains of amino acid’s and build up cells tissues and enzymes as well as acting as structural components of tissues such as muscles and hormones.
Iodine test goes yellow ➡️ ?
Black when starch is present.
Benedict solution goes blue ➡️
Brick red if simple sugar e.g glucose is present.
Biuret solution goes blue ➡️
Purple of protein is present.
Ethanol test gives ➡️
Cloudy white layer if lipid is present.
Enzymes
Large proteins which folded to form the active site which matches the shape of a specific substrate or otherwise known as biological catalysts.
Carbohydrates
Made up of units of sugar and some I’ll complex carbohydrates which are long chains of simple sugars joint such as starch or cellulose.
