Chapter 2 - Cell Division Flashcards
Meiosis
A cell divides to form gametes and the chromosomes are copied so there are four sets. The cell then quickly divides twice in succession to form for gametes each with single set of chromosomes.
Tumour
A mass of abnormally growing cells which invade surrounding tissue.
Benign tumour
Grow in one place but can grow very large and cause pressure or damage to an organ.
Malignant tumour
Spread and invade healthy tissue and otherwise known as cancer. Splits up and releases clumps of cells into bloodstream which are carried round and can launch into organs of the body. Continue uncontrolled division and form secondary tumours which live longer than normal cells and divide more rapidly.
Radiotherapy
Cancer cells are destroyed by targeted doses of radiation.
Chemotherapy
Chemicals are used to stop cancer cells dividing or make them self destruct.
Tissue
Group of cells with similar structure and function working together.
Muscular tissue
Contract to bring about movement.
Glandula tissue
Contain cells which produce and release enzymes and hormones.
Epithelial tissue
Covers the outside of the body and internal organs.
Epidermal tissue
Cover and protect surfaces in plants.
Palisade mesophyll
Contain many chloroplasts and carry out photosynthesis.
Spongy mesophyll
Have large airspaces to make gas diffusion easier.
Mitosis
Asexual cell division were two identical cells are formed. This produces more identical cells for growth and repair and replacement.
