Respitory System Flashcards
Pleura
A membrane which covers both the lungs and inner walls of the chest cavity
Pleural fluid
Between the chest cavity and the pleura, allows the lungs to slide along the walls of the chest while breathing
Nasal cavity
Projections - which increases surface area
Mucus - filters, warms and moistens air
Filters, warms and moistens the air
Pharynx
Open - Passage for air and food
Circular muscles - push of food
Epiglottis
Flap of tissue - that closes off the trachea so you don’t end up with water or food in your airways
Larynx
Voice box - air passes over the vocal cords to make sounds
Cartilage - holds the shape
Trachea
Lined with cilia - carriers air to and from the lungs
Mucus membrane - purifies air
Bronchi
Divisions of the trachea - Carrie’s air to and from the lungs, divides the lungs into left and right
Lined with cilia -
Mucus membrane - purifies air
Bronchioles
Fine tubes - passages to alveoli
Lined with cilia -
Alveoli
Tiny air sacs - increase surface area
Majority of lungs
Covered in blood vessels - allows more gasses exchange
Thin walls - allows more gasses exchange
Ribs
Hard framework - protection
Allow for breathing - expands the area of the lungs
Intercostal muscles
Muscles between the ribs - moves the rib cage up and down
