Cell Division - Meiosis Flashcards
1
Q
Meiosis
A
Creates 4 daughter cells which all have haploid cells
Creates sex cells
Have cells cross over
2
Q
The instructions of meiosis
A
Prophase 1 Metaphase 1 Anaphase 1 Telophase 1 Prophase 2 Metaphase 2 Anaphase 2 Telophase 2
3
Q
Prophase 1
A
Homologous chromosomes (same genetic material) pair up They then exchange a some amount of genetic information - crossing over
4
Q
Metaphase 1
A
Chromosomes line up in the midline of the cell in pairs
5
Q
Anaphase 1
A
Takes one whole chromosome in each direction - pulled by the spindle fibres
6
Q
Telophase 1
A
Cell is halved but the chromosome stays as a chromosome
7
Q
Prophase, Metaphase, anaphase and telophase 2
A
Same as the “1” but when in anaphase the chromosome is halved in the centromere to create chromatid
8
Q
Non-disjunction
A
Uneven spilt of chromosome/chromatid in meiotic division
Daughter cells don’t have even genetic material
Only occurs in meiosis
