Cells Flashcards
Cytosol
Liquid within the cell, which dissolves sugar and carbs, fats and proteins are not dissolved.
Cytoplasm
Liquid which fills up the cell (includes the organelles within the cell)
Organelles
The “solid” parts of the cytoplasm
Nucleus
Largest organelle which contains dna and is surrounded by a double-membrane
Ribosomes
Attaches to membrane (endoplasmic reticulum) or in cytoplasm, it joins up with amino acids to create proteins
Endoplasmic reticulum
Has two different parts, which are smooth and rough, both parts have ribosomes attached to it. Stores and transporting molecules between membranes.
Golgi body
Modifies proteins and packages for secretion. Vesicles are located outside if the golgi body, these bubbles (vesicles) contain proteins
Membrane
Layer of protein
Lysosomes
Created by the golgi body, which have digestive enzymes which digest broken, old or incoming vesicles / organelles
Mitochondria
Powerhouse of the cell which is shaped like a sausage with a double membrane inside and out side. Cellular respiration occurs here which creates energy (atp)
Flagella
Allows movement across the cell. If they are small, long and are single or double
Cilia
Smaller than the flagella and are multiple (more than 2)
