Excretory System Flashcards
Excretion
The removal of metabolic wastes (wastes from cell processed)
Elimination
The removal of indigestible products
Metabolic wastes
Substances that are left over from the cell process, cannot be used so has to be excreted
Examples :
Water, carbon dioxide, urea and creatine
Balance
Maintaining optimal conditions by removing metabolic wastes
Allows the body to maintain optimal conditions
Solute
things dissolved in liquid/solvent
Solute (salts things absorbed)
Solvent (blood plasma)
Isotonic
Same solute as blood
Hypotonic
Less solutes
Hypertonic
more solute
Maintaining blood plasma
The body is constantly trying to keep blood at the appropriate levels
By :
getting rid of express substances
Maintain the substance that are low
Kidney
Organ level - Filters blood, removes toxins and things which need to be excreted
Main func - removal of metabolic wastes and the control of concentration of solute in the blood
Liver
Breakdown old proteins into energy
Old protein > amino acids > Energy
Detoxifies blood from alcohol and other drugs
Skin
Sweats out water which contains urea, salts and lactic acids
