Components Of Bloods Flashcards
Components of blood
Plasma
Red blood cells (erythrocytes)
White blood cells (leucocytes)
Platelets (thrombocytes)
Plasma
55% of blood volume
90% of plasma is water
Erythrocytes (rbc)
Disk shaped, no nucleus = more surface area for haemoglobin
Carry haemoglobin for transport of oxygen
Produced in bone marrow and destroyed in liver
Leucocytes (wbc)
Destroy pathogens (foreign body causes disease) 5 mains types - Lymphocytes, Monocytes and Granulocytes- Neutrophils, Basophils and Eosinophils
Thrombocytes (platelets)
Cell fragments, no nucleus
Blood clotting
Formed in bone marrow
1/3 size of erythrocytes
Five types of leucocytes
Lymphocytes
- A promote apoptosis in pathogens
- B creates of antibody (specific)
Monocytes
- Fights of antigens, engulfs
Granulocytes
- Neutrophils, eating engulfing antigens (phagocytosis)
- Basophils, what causes an allergic reaction - non specific
- Eosinophils, contain small amounts of enzyme proteins to break down - non specific
Antigen and antibody
Antigens - have identifiers
Antibodies - fight off antigens
