DNA Replication Flashcards
What is DNA repication
DNA replication is when dna is replicated to be used in things such as healing/fixing broken parts of the body and growing
What are the steps to DNA repication
Unziping
Priming
Copying
Finishing
What is Unzipping
Hydrogen bonds between the nucleotides break,
Helicase seprates the two strands of nucleotides into a “replication fork”
What is Priming
Short strand of RNA and joins into unzipped strands
Complementary to the unzipped strand
Leading strand = 1 primer
Lagging strand = Many primers
Reads up 3-5
Writes down 5-3
What is Copying
DNA polymerase is an enzyme that binds to primed sections of dna
Attaches complimentary nucleotide to dna, 5’-3’
Leading strand has contionous replication, while lagging strand has discontinous replication (okazaki fragment)
What is Finishing
Primes are removed by exonuclease. Dna ligase reforms the hydrogen bonds.
