Q

Epiphyses - singular

A

Ends of the bone covered by a thin layer of particular cartilage
Compact bone surrounding cancellous (spongy) bone
Cancellous bone has cavities containing red bone marrow - produce blood cells

Fibrous
Not at joints has articular cartilage instead
Located only at the diaphysis

Q

Bone functions

A

Spongey bone / Microscopic

Irregular thin bony plates called trabeculae
Bone cells occupy spaces within them, there is arrangement
Blood vessels pass through the irregular spaces
Capable of repair and continue form blood cells and store nutrients

Q

Osteons

A

Compact bone - comprised of osteons

Each osteons contains a central canal. Surrounded by lamellar (layered rings)

Lacunae are the spaces in between the rings, which contain osteocytes

Q

Osteons

A

Canaliculi (help to transport blood into the blood vessels) run between the lamellae

The central canal contains the blood capillary to transport blood to and from the bone

The osteons runs down parallel with the bone
