Metabolism Flashcards
What is metabolism
All chemical reactions that take place in the cell
Catabolism
Breaks things down = releases energy
Anabolism
Build up, requires energy
Organic
A large molecule that contain carbon
Organic examples
Carbohydrates, amino acids, proteins, lipids, dna and rna
Inorganic examples
Oxygen, water, minerals, salts, carbon dioxide
Carbohydrates
2H : 1O
Carbon, oxygen and hydrogen
Poly/Mono/Di - Saccharide
Poly - Many
Mono - One
Di - Two
Saccharide - sugar/ carbohydrate unit
Proteins
Contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen
Can contain sulfur and phosphorous
Made of amino acids (aa)
Bonds between aa are called peptide
Two amino acids are called?
Dipeptide
What is ten or more (aa) joined together
Polypetide
Lipids
Contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
Contain less oxygen than carbohydrates
Examples of lipids
Fats, phospholipids and steroids (cholesterol, testosterone and oestrogen )
Lipids
Consists of one molecule of glycerol and 1/2/3 fatty acid molecules
Fat stored in the body is triglyceride, glycerol and three fatty acids
Nucleic acids
Large molecules containing carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorous and nitrogen
Made of nucleotides; nucleotides contain one nitrogen base, sugar and a phosphate
