Membrane Transport Flashcards
Passive transport
Does not involve energy, follows concentration gradient
Examples of passive transport
Simple diffusion
Facilitated diffusion
Simple diffusion
Passive, molecules are able to pass directly through the phosolipid bilayer (cell membrane).
Oxygen, carbon dioxide and alcohol
Facilitated diffusion
Uses protein/channel to diffuse
Active transport
Requires energy, goes against the concentration gradient
Vesicular transport
Active transport
Exocytosis, leaving the cell
Endocytosis, enterring the cell
Osmosis
Is a facilitated diffusion - uses protein
Factors which affect the transport of the cell membrane
Membrane thickness : molecules have a harder time to get through the membrane
Temp/ pressure : temp can affect what goes through, if its cold the membrane cannot get molecules through as it if frozen/cold
Concentration gradient : High to low
Surface area : Larger area = Higher rate of diffusion
