Respiratory system Flashcards
Inhaling and Exhaling are also know as
Inspiration, Expiration
Is the respiratory system voluntary or involuntary
both, breathing happens unconsciously but we can also focus on our breathing
How does inspiration work
- oxygen is absorbed into the bloodstream and delivered by hemoglobin the the cells of the body
- The Diaphragm muscle contracts and depresses into the abdomen , creates a vacuum effect
- the change in pressure causes lungs to inflate as air is pulled into the lungs
How does expiration work
- oxygen is absorbed waste is expelled in the form of CO2
- the diaphragm muscle relaxes, deflating the lungs
Pathway of air in body in order
- Nasal or Oral cavity
- Pharynx
- Larynx
- Trachea- divides to left and right bronchial tubes
- Left and right lungs
- Bronchioles
- Alveoli
Which lung is larger , why
RIGHT lung- has 3 lobes
left lung- has 2 lobes
what is pleura
membrane that covers the lungs
what part of the brain controls breathing
medulla oblongata in the brainstem
how many breathes do we take at rest
12-20 times
what parts are included in the UPPER respiratory tract
Mouth, nose, pharynx, larynx (above vocal cords)
what parts are included in the LOWER respiratory tract
Larynx (below vocal cords), trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, lungs (including alveoli)
why is breathing through the nose healthier for you
The narrower passageway slows exhalation which allows more oxygen to be absorbed with each breath
also nose hairs filter the air
what is COPD
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Chronic emphysema and bronchitis combined
Leads to a lack of O2
Person may be on supplemental oxygen (portable oxygen tanks)
Precautions
Open flames or heat sources – candles, smoking, laser, etc.
what is asthma
swelling of the lining of the bronchi and bronchioles
Mucous produced, narrowing of the airways, hard to breathe ***difficulty breathing out
Puffers are the usual treatment
Allergy – scents
May lead to respiratory difficulty
