Urinary Bladder
Urethra
Process of Urinary Excretion
Urine is formed in the kidneys through filtration of blood
Travels down the ureters and is stored_in the bladder
During urination, urine travels through the urethra and is excreted.
We process 800-2000mL of urine daily (up to 2L)
steps forming urine
- filtratration
- reabsorption
- secretion
*nephrons in kidney filter blood
Is there a connection from the stomach to the kidneys?
Fluid is absorbed mostly through the small intestine into the blood stream which is then filtered by the kidneys
Kidneys
Located at the back of the abdominal cavity Approximately 11cm in length in adults Receive blood from renal arteries Branch off of the descending aorta Each kidney attaches to a ureter
ureter
Originate at each kidney and connect to the bladder
Tubes of smooth muscle that carry urine
25-30cm long and 3-4mm in diameter
Kidney Stones
Hard calcium oxalate crystals
Extremely painful
bladder
Hollow muscular organ
Collects and stores urine
Can hold between 300-500mL of fluid before urge to empty occurs
Can expand to hold upwards of _800-1000ml
urethra
Removes urine from the body
Longer in men than women
Final stage of excretory system
lungs
Lungs help to excrete carbon dioxide
By-product of chemical reaction of food with stomach acid
