Respiratory sounds Flashcards
Types of breath sounds
(NORMAL)
Tracheal
Bronchial
Bronchovesicular
Vesicular
Types of breath sounds
(ABNORMAL) Adventitious
Wheezing - lower pitch sound on expiratory
AAC: (asthma, anaphylaxis, COPD).
Rhonchi - coarse rattling (insp and exp.) mucus in the lungs.
Crackles (Rales)- bubbling/ popping, fluid in the lungs,
PE, CHF, early onset of pneumonia.
cough with yellow, green sputum = infection
(pink = CHF)
Stridor - upper airway (croup, epiglottitis, inhalation burn, anaphylaxis, foreign body), high pitched inspiratory, (sometimes expir), musical,
Pleural friction- inflammation of the pleural space

Wheezing
- AAC: asthma, anaphylaxis, COPD
- high pitched expiratory Nosie
- caused by narrowed airways (bronchoconstriction)
- heard also without stethoscope
- on inspiration and expiration
- usually bilateral,
- if unilateral = obstruction by a foreign object
Crackles/ Rales
- FINE (clears when coughing)
- MEDIUM
- COARSE (low bubbling)
- bubbling / popping - rales on inhalation,
- Implies fluid or exudate (pus or clear fluid pushed out of the tissues).
Caused by:
Infection of bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, pulmonary oedema, ARDS
Stridor
- Upper airway,
- caused by :
1. croup
2. Epiglottitis
3. Inhalation burn
4. Anaphylaxis
5. Foreign body airway obstruction,
-musical ,continues high pitched wheezing
-caused by disrupted airflow
-mostly inspiratory
Ronchi
(out-dated word that means fluid in the upper airway)
- caused by blockage or secretion in the upper airway
- continuous , lower pitched, coarse rattling sound
- on inspiration and expiration
Friction Rubs
- inflammation of the pleural space case friction rubs
- not produced inside the airways
- during inspiration and expiration
