Types of breath sounds
(ABNORMAL) Adventitious

A

Wheezing - lower pitch sound on expiratory
AAC: (asthma, anaphylaxis, COPD).

Rhonchi - coarse rattling (insp and exp.) mucus in the lungs.

Crackles (Rales)- bubbling/ popping, fluid in the lungs,
PE, CHF, early onset of pneumonia.
cough with yellow, green sputum = infection
(pink = CHF)

Stridor - upper airway (croup, epiglottitis, inhalation burn, anaphylaxis, foreign body), high pitched inspiratory, (sometimes expir), musical,

Pleural friction- inflammation of the pleural space

Wheezing

A
  • AAC: asthma, anaphylaxis, COPD
  • high pitched expiratory Nosie
  • caused by narrowed airways (bronchoconstriction)
  • heard also without stethoscope
  • on inspiration and expiration
  • usually bilateral,
  • if unilateral = obstruction by a foreign object

Crackles/ Rales

A
  1. FINE (clears when coughing)
  2. MEDIUM
  3. COARSE (low bubbling)
  • bubbling / popping - rales on inhalation,
  • Implies fluid or exudate (pus or clear fluid pushed out of the tissues).

Caused by:
Infection of bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, pulmonary oedema, ARDS

Stridor

A
  • Upper airway,
  • caused by :
    1. croup
    2. Epiglottitis
    3. Inhalation burn
    4. Anaphylaxis
    5. Foreign body airway obstruction,

-musical ,continues high pitched wheezing
-caused by disrupted airflow
-mostly inspiratory
