Nervous system Flashcards
Nervous system function
Sensory ( perception)
Information transfer and processing
Motor function
Nervous system consists of..
Brain and
spinal cord , it’s generally refers to CNS and PNS= network of peripheral nerves (12 pairs of cranial and 31 pairs of spinal nerves).
Pns consist of
Two divisions:
1. Sensory (afferent) devision ( with receptors in the skin)
2. Motor (efferent) ,which split into the somatic ns and autonomic ns.
Neuron
Neurons and neuroglia
Cell body- with nucleus and other organelles.
Dendrites-
Axon- transmit electrical signals from cell body to the axon terminals. Connects via chemicals called neurotransmitters realised from axon terminals.
Neurons vary in size, shape and function.
Neurons with sheaths conduct impulses faster.
Neuroglia, are supporting, non impulse generating/ conducting cells. They providing structural support for neurons.
Brain 4 main sections
- Brain stem
- Cerebellum
- Diencephalon
- Cerebrum
Brain stem
- Medulla Oblongata
- Ponds
- Midbrain
Medulla oblongata - relays other part of brain and spinal cord.
- controls loc
- center for hr, bp and breathing management.
Pons
- relays impulses between cerebellum, medulla and midbrain,
- contains number of cranial nerves
- center to regulate breathing.
Midbrain-
- controls and coordinates movements
- contains original of two cranial nerves.
-
Cerebellum and Diencephalon
Cerebrum
Meninges
Dura
Arachnid- with cerebrospinal fluid)
Pia
Cranial nerves
12 pairs
Spinal cord
33 vertebrae:
7 cervical
12 thoracic
5 lumbar
5 sacral
4 coccygeal
Somatic ns
Voluntary, allows us to control our skeletal muscle
It has involuntary component: reflex
Autonomic ns
ANS: decided into 3 parts:
1. Sympathetic
2. Parasympathetic
3. Enteric ns
