Endocrine system Flashcards
Endocrine system
Contains collection of glands located throughout the body
That glands are responsible for the secretion of hormones.
The endocrine system works alongside the nervous system.
Endocrine system consists of:
Pineal, pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands.
Htere number of organs and tissues that are not strictly endocrine glands, but do secret hormones : pancreas, overies, tastiest, liver, and heart.
Pancreas
Is mixed endocrine and exocrine gland
- is involved in producing pancreatic enzymes
- they are 5 types of pancreas islets, which also regulates blood glucose
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
Blood sugar regulations
Hormonal control of glucose is largely dependent on endocrine pancreas via the hormones insulin and glucagon.
Insulin increases transport of glucose across cell membranes and is released by beta cells. And it targets muscle, fat and livcells.
Glucagon targets liver, promoting conversion of glycogen into glucose and the creation of glucose from lactic and amino acids. This results in increased glucose released by the liver into the blood stream.
Adrenal glands
Responsible for secreting adrenaline and noradrenaline
Adrenal cortex secrets aldosterone.
Aldosterone helps regulate level of sodium Na+ and potassium K+by
Increasing reabsorption of sodium from distal tubes of the kidneys .
It also increases excretion of potassium.
Aldosterone helps to regulate BP.
Glucocorticoids such as cortisol.
Cortisol function: formation of glucose, breakdown of proteins and triglycerides.
Adrenal cortex secrets sex steroids such as oestrogen, progesterone, and androgen.
