Respiratory Distress In Newborn Flashcards
RDS?
RR >60
Increase work of breathing
noisy breathing: grun: strider, wheeze
Central cyanosis
Causes of RDS?
#1 Sepsis/pneumonia: #1 - most dangerous #2 Wet Lung/TTN- #2 -most common
TTN?
Transient tachypnoea of the newborn
Cause of TTN?
Continued production of delayed removal of fetal lung liquid, will get better on own, but will have supportive Rx.
MAS?
Meconium aspiration syndrome
Why MAS bad?
Chemical pneumonitis
Infection on top of it.
Why diaphragmatic hernia, so unwell?
Underdeveloped lungs, severe pulmonary hypertension
Clues to neonatal sepsis?
Mother sick? Chorioamnionitis?
Spontaneous labour
Most common causes of preterm distress?
- Sepsis
2. RDS/hyaline membrane disease
RDS cause?
Lack of surfactant in lung
Secondary RDS?
MAS, inactivated
Surfactant production started/caused by?
Cortisol surge in 34-35 weeks
Where is surfactant created?
Type 2 pneumocytes
RDS
DM2 mothers
Males
Second twin
FHx
Surfactants prevent?
prevent long term Chronic lung disease
Caffeine to reduce BPD
