Respiratory Flashcards
Major functions of respiratory system
oxygenates blood, expels carbon dioxide.
Components of respiratory system
Note, pharynx/throat, Larynx, trachea/Windpipe, lUngs
Nose
entrance to repiratory stysem
pharynx/throat
shared area btwn digestive and rewpiratory system
Larynx
tube that receives air after pharynx. In front of esophagus.
Esophagus
tube that receives food from the pharynx
Trachea
rigid tube leading to lungs. Recieves air from the larynx
Lungs
organ where oxygen/carbon dioxide are exchanged btwn air/blood. Gas exchange occurs at alveoli
Alvioli (old)
air sacs at end of branching tubes inside lungs
Maturation of lings
the mahor determinant of potential to survive after birth.
Duct growth
begins as an extension off the pharynx. Grows and forms larynx, trachea, and lungs.
New blood vessels
blood vessels surround ends of lung tubes.
Alveoli (young)
sacs at end of tubes where oxygen is exchanged. Allows oxygen to enter blood. Respiration is possible, but rudimentary. Survival after birth is possible… with difficulty.
Surfactant
A substance that reduces surface tension. Makes lungs easier to inflate. Increases greatly in last few weeks before birth. Premature infants are given hormones to promote surfactant production.
Fetal breathing movements
Occur when fetus is asleep. Stimulates lung development. Brings amniotic fluid into lungs. Doesn’t provide oxygen.
